Promise House believes that the family is the primary unit in our society to care for children and is dedicated to this principle. The Promise House main objective is to provide quality care and treatment to enable children and youth to leave our care and grow up in a permanent, family setting. Only when the family is incapable of meeting its obligation to the child is a placement plan, temporary or permanent, pursued. Promise House provides a variety of services to both youth and families. Services are oriented towards stabilization and facilitating development in clients. A continuum of care is provided assuring that the youth and family is able to receive the services most appropriate to their needs.

Youth and families come to Promise House from a variety of sources, including school guidance counselors, Child Protective Services, juvenile authorities, church groups, other agencies, and the community at large.

Description of Services:

The EMERGENCY YOUTH SHELTER is a short-term, crisis intervention facility for up to 20 youths who are runaway, homeless or at-risk. As a no-cost shelter in Dallas County, Promise House gives youth a safe alternative to the streets. The primary goal of the Emergency Youth Shelter is to return each youth to a safe family environment or an alternative stable setting.

CASE MANAGEMENT SERVICES are offered in all programs to ensure that youth and their families are linked to available community resources. Community and home-based services are offered for youth throughout their stay at Promise House and can be continued once they leave.

The tremendous success Promise House has had over the years is due in large part to the counseling services that are provided in every program. Depending on the need of the family, Promise House offers INDIVIDUAL, FAMILY AND GROUP COUNSELING at no cost. Families may continue to receive these services after they leave Promise House.

The TRANSITIONAL LIVING SERVICES program is for older youth who have nowhere to go, no family, no money and nowhere to live. This program offers older youth the opportunity not only to learn how to live independently, but to finish their education, find meaningful work and to become productive citizens.

PREGNANT AND PARENTING TEEN SERVICES are available through Wesley Inn and community-based services. Promise House’s group home, Wesley Inn, provides housing and support services to homeless pregnant and parenting teens and their children. Community based services support teenage mothers and fathers by teaching them how to parent and how to access community services.

PARENT EDUCATION classes are offered to teach parents and youth ways to build and strengthen their relationships. These classes are offered in both English and Spanish.

The ALTERNATIVE DAY SCHOOL gives youth who have dropped out of school or for whom school is not working, the opportunity to continue their education with individualized attention. The goal of the program is for youth to return to their school with the tools to continue their education successfully.

DRUG AND ALCOHOL PREVENTION AND EDUCATION programs teach youth how to have fun without drugs and alcohol. Through overnight camping trips, recreational and educational field trips, and challenge courses, youth learn healthy alternatives to drug and alcohol use.

Through STREET OUTREACH Promise House connects with youth living on the streets to educate them about the dangers of their living situations and to offer them shelter, survival necessities and access to community resources.
